[ Maybe this would teach her to be so trusting of the people she meets (it likely won't, but). Miyako's intent on trying to separate them leaves her less focused on the actual happenings - with less expectation of what could happen since magic as it's establish isn't a thing in her own world.
She barely has any recognition of the thing curling around until it's there and short of a quick proclamation from the bird - who's not capable of grabbing the feather from his headband in time... There's little more of a struggle at the sudden movement, of the action than a sputtering cry and confusion.
