He's able to block the sword strikes well enough; he understands a bit more fully what Gray meant when she'd told him that it's an instinctual thing, that you just have to learn how to not get hit, and now that it's in practice he sees what she means. It's a lot of deflection and looking for an opening, it's true, but eventually he finds himself annoyed with the shield, and that's when he just shifts his grip on the blade he's got in his left hand and grabs the side of the thing.
Normally this is a pretty bad idea. Unfortunately, Paul is a lot stronger than he looks.
The shield gets wrenched hard to the side, in an attempt to overpower Cid's sense of balance and hopefully take him at least somewhat off-guard; the other blade goes driving down hard toward his leg, attempts to find purchase there in a movement both sudden and violent.]
