( he doesn't know any more than anyone else here, but when it comes to dying and being thrust into a completely different realm of existence and being forced to sink or swim, this isn't his first rodeo. makoto would have almost certainly sank if he hadn't first learned to watch, listen, and learn. and it was from his dealing with J that he learned something else invaluable: don't try to divine what answers others want for you to find. instead, find your own answers and use them to find the questions that fit. so he's been working back from observation to query, pulling at threads because it's really the only thing he can do right now.

he doesn't reply; instead, his expression changes slightly, though perhaps only towards pity. ah, humans — he regards them with endearment and contempt in equal measure, even if he was one just a few years ago. and even with the fangs and the ears, the aura of moral pours off of this one in waves.

makoto is fortunate in that he genuinely doesn't care. the Earth could have been plunged into the sun, and he would not care. all of hell could have been consumed in fire, and he would not care. if, somewhere out in the universe, J still exists, so too will he exist until he can destroy and devour him. and then, after that... well, he genuinely doesn't care. maybe he will finally have the peace to find oblivion as well. it is what he had wanted originally, after all. )

True. We could be dangerous variables, even if we're toothless for the time being. ( it's as he says the word that his eyes flicker downwards towards courier's mouth, then back up again to his eyes. he takes a slightly different tact, his tone becoming harsher in an instant. ) If they wished to cut all of our throats in some ritual sacrifice to an unknown god, they could have saved themselves a lot of resources in keeping us... moderately comfortable.

( his pale eyes sweep around them: bedrolls, rations, campfires. a concerted effort had been made to give them the bare minimum, but there's little to no reason to do that for the sacrificial lamb that wouldn't live to see the next week. )

So that's the real question. What benefit can we give to them alive?
