( anything for a break in the monotony. makoto can be a remarkably patient creature, depending on the circumstances, but there's only so much of this interminable waiting that he can take.
hiccup sits up to fix the guard in question as an unwilling third member in their conversation (several dozen yards between then notwithstanding), but makoto is even more brazen. he remains horizontal on his bedroll, but he turns on his side toward the guard, resting his head in one hand as he props it up with an elbow. it makes it even more terribly obvious that the two are talking about him, but... he must not be able to allow a gap in the perimeter, because he isn't budging. )
Oh, of course. Look at him now. The way his face is contorting into that terrible frown... He's just disappointed that we have to see him in a state like this. What a terrible impression it'll make, after all.
( all first impressions were already well and truly made for all of these soldiers as far as makoto was concerned, however, and they were piss-poor. he isn't sure he'll ever be in a state to make good on the simmering, prickling feeling of anger he feels towards them, but if he does... he's a terrible enemy to make, regardless of appearances.
in a deliberate contrast to that, however, he makes his smile warm as he looks back toward his companion. ) We've been through such an ordeal these last few weeks... Certainly that's been a part of the plan all along. That, and waking up to a fully-stocked wardrobe, so we don't have to wear these dreadful things any longer.
( he's tired of feeling like some bedraggled altar boy, let alone the fact that they haven't really been given ample opportunity to wash the damn things. )
