it isn't especially comforting; sure, Abel could take it as Amos has seen worse on their travels-- he most likely has, given that once the whips do their work, a man has little choice but to become pliant and cooperative and thus the violence might stop. but the priest gets the feeling that Amos's experiences in places far and away from this one may not have been much kinder, if simply a different brand of unkindness.
his eyes briefly settle at some point on the rough ground in front of him, but he isn't left to ruminate over this vaguely depressing topic for all too long. the sound of Amos's voice-- small, and maybe in some way quietly plaintive-- has the priest looking back over to meet him in the eye with a look of surprise having seized him. and it doesn't take long after that for it to soften. ]
