Jim has never minded how Spock is, not really. Frustrated in the beginning, certainly, but he's never wanted to change how the man was, just wanted to know how to understand him better. Not that the FO ever made that easy.

"He died, shot by a terrorist," he explains, throat suddenly dry. "He's the reason I am where I am today." He just... hopes that he's living up to Pike's expectations.
