( perhaps... or perhaps makoto had just been trying to test him. it's a classic tactic in hell — lull your social opponent into a false sense of security, either by making them think they had found an ally in you or trick them into underestimating you, before you make a sharp turn in subject, intensity, tone, and timing. if you unsettled them, throwing them off of their game, you had them in the palm of your hand. and if they kept up you, well, you simply knew you'd found a worthy adversary.

those rules don't apply here, but it doesn't stop makoto from falling into old habits. all he's interested in doing is learn about his fellow captives, and however the stranger answered, either verbally or not, would be useful to him. that, and it helped kill time. he's horribly bored, waiting around for whatever that was going to happen to finally happen.

he ponders the first thought the stranger gives him. it's a unique one, and not one makoto has had himself. scouts... from their dying homes? or to some unknown destination?

he steeples his fingers, thoughtful. )
They certainly didn't seem like they wanted to lose even one of us.

( it's why they had used those odd whips to bind them and pacify their rebellion. if they wanted to enforce them with fear, they could have used a more lethal weapon — make a few examples, and the rest of the newly-hatched arrivals to this world would've fallen in line.

he hums. )
There's no way to say for sure, not yet, but... I think you raise good points. If they didn't expect us to be able something they can't themselves, they wouldn't have been such good shepherds and wardens to us. ( a beat. ) It could be they need us for information we carry with us already. It could be they plan to send us somewhere they can't go.

( he taps the pad of a slender index finger on the swell of his bottom lip. then he seems to give up on the whole thread altogether, extending his hands to either side of him, fingers spread in a gesture of surrender. ) Oh, well! To think on it any more would just excessive over-worrying, don't you think?
