[ Seeing the kick coming, Howl contorts out of the way, sparing himself the broken nose and sliced lip that would have undoubtedly resulted otherwise. And contorts is truly the best word for it; there is something unnerving and unnatural about the form that Howl has assumed that will become more apparent to Estinien the longer he looks at and interacts with it. In terms of sheer size, Howl is now at least a foot taller than the remarkably tall Elezen, but it's a result of the aberrational proportions of his transformed body, and his enormous wingspan matches his large size.
The initial surprise of the attack wears off quickly, even as the searing pain gets worse. Seeing those wings flare behind Estinien, everything quickly makes sense, and a decision is made in the same instant he twists out of the way of Estinien's boot. Howl lets go of the spear, and it tears out back the same way it came. He feels it widen the wound on the way out, but it's worth it if it means getting the dragoon off of him.
Instinct takes control and his training and experience does the rest. Straightening himself out in the air, Howl beats his enormous wings with ferocious strength, forcing them through the air in spite of the still bleeding wound. For now what he needs its to get away from Estinien, to collect himself, to formulate a counterattack, and to maybe consider the necessity of pushing his transformation farther — although that would be tantamount to a loss, in a way, with how costly that would be to Howl in the long run. ]
