That's likely why it's difficult for so many of us to believe. We want to have a say in what happened, to have some sort of impact that may not have been possible.
The reality is that it doesn't matter, right now. Whether it's true or not, there's nothing we can do about it but do our best to survive and move forward here. As for what that means for us... I suppose we each have to decide for ourselves.

But I don't imagine those who cared about you would enjoy seeing you waste away. So you should care for yourself with them in mind, if nothing else. That's what I think.
