1) It will be explained to characters by Xishen after they've settled in.

2) It hasn't been long enough for them to be recognized by their faces unless they are very strange looking, so travelling anonymously is easy enough at the moment. This will change as months pass. If they need to "prove" their status they'll have to show their Shard.
